The 10th Day of Winter's Thaw, YK 5398

As compiled by Lord Remner Van Kevlen, Royal Advisor of Magical Affairs
for King Durant de Angelosis, ruler of the Kingdom of Langington.

Much has happened is such a short time that reliable information is becoming harder and harder to come by. Currently, King Durant de Angelosis the Fifth, ruler of the Kingdom of Langington, has massed a force of more than 30,000 soldiers within the southeastern foothills of the Fillian and Kienken Mountains, an area known as Trader's Gap. Of the 30,000 Langington soldiers, 28,000 are regular infantry and 2,000 are cavalry, comprised of both light and heavy war horses. To the best of our knowledge, King Tearsac of the Plains, ruler of the Province of Arvandus, has gathered a force of at least 25,000 within the northeastern foothills of the Fillian and Kienken Mountains, on the other end of Trader's Gap. Little is know of the composition of King Tearsac's army, except that he has employed the aid of several mountain giants, as well as that of orcs and goblinkind. In less than four days time, King de Angelosis will personally lead another army of 22,500 Langington soldiers, 20,500 regulars and 2,000 cavalry, to meet up with the first army.

Prince Khyle de Angelosis, ruler of the Miaford Commonwealth and younger brother of King de Angelosis, has gathered together a force of 12,500 regular infantry and is preparing to lead them into Langington to meet up with King de Angelosis' main host. It appears that, by the end of Winter's Thaw, King de Angelosis, with the help of Prince Khyle, will be in command of some 65,000 Langington and Miaford soldiers. Whether the king will actually lead them through Trader's Gap and into Arvandus, or whether he will await the advance of King Tearsac's army, is anyone's guess.

To ensure that King Tearsac isn't planning on sending his army to the east, around Malek's Point and through a portion of the Tempec Forest and the Fpathen nation of Jahhne, or west, around the Kienken Mountains and through the Kienken Forest, King de Angelosis has dispatched two smaller companies of 1,000 soldiers to key points along both of those possible routes. King de Angelosis had originally wanted to send a minimum of 5,000 soldiers to each location, but his mind was changed by General Tallin Yates, King de Angelosis' Lord Marshal and Royal Advisor of Military Affairs. As General Yates pointed out, the foothills between the eastern Fillian Mountains and Malek's Point are impassable, and the Fpathen of Jahhne certainly wouldn't allow King Tearsac the privilege of marching his army through their sacred forest. And to the west, King Tearsac's army would have to fight through the 24,000 Dervatear warriors massed along the Independent State/Arvandus border, as well as the Pseithen clans and Havanathe communities of the Kienken Forest, before reaching Langington from the west. No, if King Tearsac were to launch an advance on the Kingdom of Langington, he would have to travel through Trader's Gap in order to do it.

With regards to King Tearsac's demand of the removal of the Dervatear slaves from the Tenet Woods in the Independent State--which was, in itself, the reason why King Tearsac began massing his forces along Trader's Gap--King de Angelosis has yet to send a reply. More than 3,500 Dervatear slaves had escaped from the small island of Atar near the beginning of Darkwinter and had traveled across the rough waters of the North Sea to the northern coast of the Independent State. From there, the ex-slaves traveled south and found refuge in the Tenet Woods, an area of land under the jurisdiction of the Kingdom of Langington. Since that time, King Dommic Stonefast, ruler of the Dervatear nation of Tsan, had continually massed his warriors together within the Tenet Woods, and has just recently marched them to the Independent State/Arvandus border. To date, King Stonefast's host is comprised of some 21,700 warriors and 2,250 WarPriests and BattleMages, and it has been rumored that another Dervatear army of 13,000 just recently began its march through the eastern foothills of the Tsan range, en route to King Stonefast's position. In addition to those Dervatear that currently make up King Stonefast's host, several members of Oesch-Onarga, including Cathal Roe, an Archmage of the Second Tier and High Advisor to King Stonefast, have offered their assistance.

But with the Dervatear army of 24,000 slowly growing, some question whether it will actually be enough if King Tearsac of the Plains launches an offensive into the Independent State. Aside from the rumored army of 25,000 massed on the Arvandian end of Trader's Gap, King Tearsac has gathered a second force of more than 42,500 along the Independent State/Arvandus border, with more arriving every day. Rumors have it that mercenaries are arriving by the shipload along the northern Arvandian coast. To add to the Dervatear's troubles, several barons and dukes of smaller states within the Independent State have sworn allegiance to King Tearsac and are currently joining their forces together into a small, yet apparently impressive army that could strike King Stonefast from the rear. And although it hasn't yet been confirmed, some are saying that King Tearsac has been sending correspondence to the Dark Witch-Queen Claudenium of Voster, in the country of Alaretra. Although Western Glashia hasn't felt the presence of Alaretrian troops in many, many years--not since the March of the Dark--everyone is all too familiar with the devastation that could follow should the Dark Witch-Queen decide to form an alliance with King Tearsac.

As of the other nations of Western Glashia, there is little to report. The Kingdom of Aarenki has yet to decide whether to join with Langington against King Tearsac and Arvandus, or to sit back, watch, and wait. To no one's surprise, Torresan and Jahhne have declined King de Angelosis' invitation to form an alliance against Arvandus, as have Cannovan and Kinashae. The Kingdom of Jordyen, on the other hand, has sworn allegiance to Langington, with the ambassador from Jordyen establishing a blood oath with General Tallin Yates. Although King Rhyus Gatau "The Lion," ruler of the Kingdom of Jordyen, hasn't sent along any troops, he has been keeping the Arvandian navy busy throughout the Inner Sea. To date, more than thirty Arvandian war vessels and merchant ships have either been captured or sunk, while Jordyen has lost only six vessels: one heavy war ship, three light war ships, and two merchant vessels. Jordanian soldiers and marines, along with several hundred ex-Arvandian Dervatear slaves set free by Jordanian sailors, have begun construction on a small fortress located on the second largest of the five Inner Isles.

In addition to his problems with the Arvandians in the Inner Sea, King Gatau is contending with a large, foreign force that has kept the northern border city of Walshemdale under siege for nearly a month. Aside from the 2,500 regular troops King Gatau dispatched to Walshemdale on the 9th Day of Midwinter, little is known of the condition of the Jordanian army within the city itself, or the foreign attackers for that matter. What has been rumored, however, is that the invading force is comprised mainly of barbarians from the Northlands, as well as two dozen, or more, frost giants. Questions and concerns have been rising with regards to this northern force, and whether they might somehow been in alliance with King Tearsac of Arvandus.
